Ski Free: 4th/5th Grade Ski Pass

As the snow continues to fall and everyone continues to complain about the snow falling while running to the grocery store to get the bread and milk there is one positive side to all this snow…

More snow means better skiing. With all the snowfall it promises to be a pretty decent ski season. Usually the local ski slopes in New York and the Poconos end up closing or reducing the amount of slopes open in early March.

At least all this snow is good for someone because everyone around here is way over the snow. My school district has had three snow days already and its only February 6th! Compared to the one or two days we usually get for the winter three seems like an enormous amount of days! Snow days cooped up in the house with the kids. Snow days   getting bundled and heading out to sled or play in the snow.

So today I am looking at the bright side. Too much snow here means many snow filled runs on the mountain. Skiing is one of my favorite things to do with the kids. I love that it is outdoors, it’s exercise and that the whole family can ski together. Honestly, there aren’t many activities you can do as a whole family outdoors especially in the winter.IMG_3290

The main drawback to skiing is the cost. The price of a lift ticket is pretty pricey these days. At slopes near me the cost can be up to $50 or moe for an adult holiday lift ticket. Add it up and it does cost a pretty penny.

Which is why I love when my kids are in fourth and fifth grade. You can apply for a 4th/5th Grade Snow Pass. For some reason the ski gods have determined that 4th and 5th graders are the perfect age for learning how to ski. I imagine the goal is to create  lifelong skiers.

I mainly ski at Jack Frost Big Boulder in Pennsylvania so I applied for the Pennsylvania 4th/5th grade Snow Pass but they have them in almost every state where there is a ski slope.

When I first learned about the 4th/5th Grade Snow Pass I couldn’t believe it. Why don’t more people take advantage of this great savings? I believe it is just one of those things that isn’t really publicized and you wouldn’t find it out unless you were looking.

buy online

Of course since nothing in life is free there is a processing fee of $30 for the pass. The application can be done online in just a few minutes. You just need to upload a color picture of your child and a report card. The site says there is a 2 week turn around time but I got Grace’s in the mail in one week.

voucher booklet

In the mail you will receive a booklet which contains 3 vouchers for all of the participating mountains. It also includes lots of extras like a free lesson and coupons. You are required to buy and adult lift ticket when you redeem the vouchers and there are some blackout dates and restrictions depending on the ski slope. All of the restrictions and fine print is available on the website to check out before you apply.

Jack Frost Big Boulder are great family ski slopes and it is actually two mountains but one resort and your lift ticket is good at both mountains. Also, it’s not too big and the kids can ski every trail there.

Big Boulder
Jack FrostAnd what’s really great is with the 4th /5th Grade Ski Pass you get 6 lift tickets since it is two mountains and there are no restrictions or blackout dates. It’s been a godsend this year. What a savings 6 lift tickets! Definitely worth the $30 processing fee.

Comfort Foods: Mini Chicken Pot Pie #recipes

Another snow day! The northeast is getting pounded with snow this winter. Which means lots of days cooped up at home while the snow falls outside our windows. Whenever it snows I always crave hardy comfort foods.

One of my all time favorites is Chicken Pot Pie. I am pretty aware of my cooking abilities and have never been delusional enough to try to make chicken pot pie from scratch. I normally opt for the frozen variety.

However, that is all changed now. I saw a commercial for mini chicken pot pies using Pillsbury Grands Biscuits. Salivating from the commercial I immediately became obsessed with the recipe. Grands Biscuits and chicken pot pie together this recipe had to be tried.

The full recipe is available on the Pillsbury site. The original recipe called for making chicken and vegetables for the filling but I shortcut it by using Chicken Pot Pie Soup and the result was phenomenal and so easy!

Ingredients:

  • Pillsbury Grands Biscuits
  • Progresso Chicken Pot Pie Soup    Unknown-141196453843

Directions:

Place each biscuit in a muffin tin. You have to press it down and bring the sides up to make a crust. Then cook the soup for a few minutes until hot and spoon the filling into each biscuit cup.  I then took one biscuit and cut it into pieces and made tops for each pot pie. Cook for 25-30 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

Have picky eaters? Me too. Just because I love chicken pot pie doesn’ t mean that everyone does. Instead of chicken pot pie soup I used rotisserie chicken with mozzarella and barbecue sauce as the filling.

Set your DVR 2:30 today. Tribute to American Legends

As anyone who knows me knows I am not that into sports. My girls play sports like all the other kids in the neighborhood, but it’s just not my thing. And my ambiguous attitude towards sports is not reserved just for little league I am equally ambivalent towards major events like the Super Bowl and the Olympics.

But that has all changed!

I am so excited for the Olympics this year!!!

What might you ask caused this major change of heart? The answer is easy the P&G Walmart Tribute American Legends of the Ice. I was lucky enough to have a front and center seat to this amazing figure skating show last December.

As someone who has never paid any mind to figure skating I sat in my seat completely mesmerized! What an experience to see such talent. They event was star studded with talented athletes new and old. It was a treat to see Olympic Athletes of all ages as well as the younger Olympic hopefuls like Gracie Gold who was amazing.

Watching my girls see figure skating for the first time was really a treat. They oohed and aahhed each time someone flipped or spun around. I think we have all developed a love of figure skating.

The Tribute to American Legends is being aired today at 2:30. It is definitely worth the watch!IMG_3073

12 Days of Holiday Traditions: Day 9 Last Minute Shopping

Shopping for the Holidays. images-17

This image in my delusional fantasies is a lovely experience. Christmas music is playing and I am leisurely perusing the store in search of all the items on my list.

Of course the reality is heavy traffic, no parking spots, too many people, cranky people, ridiculously long lines and sold out items.

There are those out there for whom Holiday Shopping is an all year pursuit. There are many reasons I am not one of those people. The main reason being that I would either forget that I had bought a gift or if I did remember I am sure I would never be able to find where I hid it!

The other reason is that I need it to be Christmas Season to shop for Christmas. I can’t shop for the Holidays in shorts. It’s a mental thing. I need to be in the Christmas frame of mind to think about Christmas gifts.

Due to this internal issue I am often faced with holiday hardships such as a 25 minute drive around the Costco parking lot with people who were short on Christmas Cheer. It was like a hunger games death match to see who could nab the next spot.

I also face the obstacle of sold out items. Okay it’s late I know but it’s not like I am looking for a Cabbage Patch kid in 1985. I could do without the smirk and sassy comment that they have been sold out for weeks. images-16

When you start shopping in December it’s tough to even find time to shop. You have to squeeze it in between the Holiday Parties, Cookie Swaps, Holiday Concerts and all of the other great Holiday activities. These are the fun ways we get together to celebrate with family and friends that I love, but it does make last minute shopping that more difficult.

Thank goodness for Amazon Prime. If it wasn’t for Amazon Prime there might not be much of a Christmas at my house. It is by far the most amazing service I have ever signed up for. It is a last minute shopper’s dream! Almost all prime items are discounted and they ship for free in two days. It is by far the easiest way to buy anything. For $79 dollars a year you have access to great prices free shipping as well as  free streaming of tv episodes and movies on Amazon Prime Player and you can even borrow books for your kindle.Amazon Prime Benefits

I certainly don’t do all my shopping online because I do enjoy the mall at Christmas. Even if the experience doesn’t live up to my delusional fantasy and it’s a little hectic and crazy. I think it’s fun walking around the mall seeing Santa and looking for gifts. It’s just easier when I know that if I can’t find something I can always order it on Amazon Prime when I get home. Or even from app on my phone while I am at the mall.
