Wreck-It Ralph… A New Classic

A movie that can join the ranks of Monsters IncIt has been awhile since an animated children’s movie has been released that is enjoyable for parents as well. Our wait is finally over now that Wreck-It-Ralph has hit the theaters.

This is a must see movie for anyone who grew up in the 80’s! If you played Super Mario Brothers or Pole Position you will totally appreciate this movie.

Our hero bad guy Wreck-It-Ralph like most of us when we hit middle age he takes stock of his life and becomes depressed that he is ALWAYS the bad guy. He feels unappreciated by the fellow characters in his game. Unhappy with his role in the game “Fix it Felix” Ralph tries to unsuccessfully to find solace over at “Pacman” by attending the Bad Guy Support Group led by one of the Pacman ghosts. However, even drinks at fellow arcade game “Tappers” can’t pull Ralph out of his funk.

Eventually he goes “Turbo” and leaves his game in search of some fame and he hopes that he can perform a heroic act and win a medal. He winds up in a dark high definition fighting game which ends up being too real and too scary for Ralph. Finally he meets up with a quirky adorable girl Vanellope. Together they embark on a great adventure.

The script is so clever and keeps you entertained. My favorite part of the movie is how they contrast between the older games, circa Super Mario Brothers and the newer high definition games. It  is so comical to see the game characters interacting together.

Definitely worth the trip to the movies. Hurry up before it is out of the theaters.

To add to the hype their are now several Wreck-It-Ralph apps for Iphone, Ipad, and Itouch. My kids are having a blast actually playing the fictional games from the movie.

Oh Sandy…

Oh Sandy can’t you see I am in misery!

As everyone on the East Coast is panicking and preparing for Hurricane Sandy I am reminded of John Travolta’s words. Words which might prove to be prophetic and we all might be crying  them on Monday and Tuesday.

There is so much hype I am having a hard time distinguishing between the hype and the facts. I have been in big denial the last few days over this storm. Laughing at the people who are running out buying generators, water and stocking up on batteries.

However, I am starting to get a little panicked. And I am beginning to feel a little like the grasshopper who laughed at the ants. The call just came in that school is closed tomorrow. Mayor Bloomberg is shutting down the NYC subways and trains at 7 pm tonight. The Board of Ed. has closed NY City Schools tomorrow as well. These are things that I have rarely seen happen in my lifetime.

LIPA, Long Island Power Authority has been calling and leaving messages about predicted power outages. We have been informed to expect to be without power for 7-10 days. The Town Supervisor has even called to warn people to be prepared and even to evacuate coastal areas.

States of Emergency are being declared.

The weather service is predicting the wind gusts will be 60-80 miles per hour! Insane!

All of this has pushed me completely out of denial and has landed me firmly into panic mode. I did some shopping yesterday I have no water- they were already out yesterday morning at my local Stop & Shop. Yoo Hoo and Kool-Aid Jammers will have to do.

I have no generator but I do have flashlights and candles- Thank you PartyLite.  Of course soccer is still on for today, so battening down the hatches will have to wait until after the game.

After Hurricane Irene I did learn a good tip. Fill ziploc bags with water and put them in your freezer. If your power goes out you have big blocks of ice that will keep your food cold for a longer time. Hopefully long enough until the power comes back on.

So I suppose we will have to wait and see what Sandy has in store for us.

I hope everyone stays safe and sound.

Off to watch some Hurricane Sandy soccer… I hope we don’t blow away!

#Fashion Friday

It amazes me how some people are just born with that fashion gene. Unfortunately I am without that gene and the innate sense of fashion. Luckily for me my sister is a fashion designer who tries to help me out where nature failed me.

A spent some time with her the other night and she gave me some good fashion advice. Here is the advice and tips she shared based on the outfit she was wearing- Enjoy!

There are so many great looks for this season, we could spend endless time discussing so I will just focus on my favorites. The blouse with embellished collar is such a great way to dress up a work outfit or to wear out for dinner. These blouses tend to be loose-fitting and longer in the back, which is great for anyone who does not have the perfect derrière! Also these tops have a sheer quality to them so they go great when layered with a fitted sweater. It s important that the sweater is some what fitted so you carve out a nice waistline. What is really great is you can get these embellished blouses and light weight sweaters at any price point. The blouse and top I am wearing in the photo are from Forever 21 and ran me about $20 a piece.

I personally love blazers, they go well with everything and look great with every body type. Whether its to create a waistline or give the appearance of a slimmer silhouette they go with EVERYTHING! When buying a blazer its important to get one that fits well, you dont want it to tight (flash back to tommy boy when Chris Farly is wearing David Spade’s blazer and it rips) and you do not want it too loose, that creates unnecessary bulk. I also bought this blazer at Forever 21, they generally run about $25-$35.

The skinny jeans are not always a crowd favorite but if you are daring and want to try a pair of coated cotton jeans like the ones I have on in the photo (they are made to appear like leather with out the added layer of sweat) you can pretty much get them at any price point. I personally tend to go for premium denim like JBrand or AG because I want them to fit well and last longer than a few washes. But really you can go to any department store or outlet store to get a similar look.

Now on to my favorite topic BOOTS!. Biker boots are so big this season, especially ankle height. The boots are my guilty pleasure so I tend to spend too much on them, the ones I am wearing in the photo are Maison Martin Margiela but fear not you can get the same look at Urban Outfitters without breaking the bank!

Finally the last key piece to any outfit is confidence, wear your outfit like you just got off the runway and everyone will believe it!

DIY Reusable Bags from Shutterfly

Amelia has been happily practicing for trick-or-treating with her new Shutterfly tote featuring Disney’s Frankenweenie. It’s a perfect accessory to her Pink Power Ranger costume. My husband has never been fond of  traditional trick-or-treat bags, he always felt they were too small and couldn’t carry enough loot. He will be thrilled with the candy carrying capabilities of this tote.

Shutterfly has this and many other great DIY projects on their site. Frankly, I thought Shutterfly was simply for printing photos and photo books. I am a huge fan of photo books, I love them. Of course when I say I love them, that is really only in theory and not in reality since I have only ever made one in my whole life. My problem -I make it too big of a project and never finish them. I am too picky and try too hard to make it perfect and therefore never make any progress. I have many half finished books- but alas my personal problems are for another day.

As far as Shutterfly is concerned I was thrilled to see how much was offered on the site. They are way more than just photo books and prints. If you are looking to create special DIY projects with your pictures the site offers lots of inspiration. They even provide tips on how to take great pictures. I might actually finish a photo book if I used Shutterfly.

I sat down this afternoon to create a DIY reusable tote to see how long it would actually take. The whole process took less than ten minutes. Ten minutes from soup to nuts and that was including logging on, uploading the picture and creating my bag.

Cute right?

Of course since I am doing this a day late and a dollar short for Halloween I had to pay to expedited shipping- such is my life. The price without shipping is only $14.99 a pretty good deal.

I am thinking these will make really nice Christmas gifts…
