What’s in a Name?

Name WordleWhat’s in a name?

Proud parents to be spend countless hours pouring over baby name books looking for the perfect name for their perfect baby. There are so many different options for parents to consider; classic names, modern names, trendy names, and even sometimes made-up names. It’s pretty acceptable to name your child anything these days especially if you are a celebrity. I am mean come on with some of these names “North West” “Apple” “Pilot Inspector”

Parents-to-be are under tremendous stress to find a perfect name for the son or daughter. They look everywhere for inspiration favorite book characters, television shows anywhere for that perfect name. Sometimes it takes all 9 months to find a name.

Often parents name their bundle of joy in honor of a relative. My sister and her husband recently had a baby boy and named him Mateo James. Mateo after his paternal great-grandfather and James for my sister’s maiden name.

How cute is he?

After careful consideration and many hours of searching finally a name is chosen. Parents are thrilled once they find the perfect name.

When the baby is born the name is always a perfect fit.

Or so you think until your six year old announcesphoto

“I hate my name can I change it to Madison?”

“Seriously can I?”

Thanks Amelia.

Wedding Trends

It’s been ages since my husband and I have been to a wedding. We have been married for for a lifetime and so have my friends.  So I was thrilled a few weeks ago when the invitation found  its way into my mailbox.

Wow it’s been a long 16 years… I think that just means I am old! I had no idea what was going on at weddings these days and I made note of all the new trends. I am thankful this bride and groom giving me the opportunity to crawl out from under this rock and see what’s happening in the world.

Here are the top 7 new trends…

1.) Cocktail Hour has enough food to feed an army. This cocktail hour had more food than my own wedding. When I planned my wedding I was delighted with pigs in a blanket at cocktail hour. Now the cocktail hour has carving stations, pasta stations, a crudite station and more. Okay so food stations not so trendy but one was a mashed potato bar! Seriously I died and went to carb loaded heaven. What’s better than mashed potatoes. And if you weren’t yet in a food induced coma there was also a taco bar.

Honestly I could have gone home after cocktail hour and taken a nap I was so full.

2.) Flip Flops. photo 2

If you were able to rally after all that food and hit the dance floor the bride and groom supplied flip flops for sore tootsies. Any guest who wished to ditch their heels for some flip flops were welcome to do so. I, of course, being raised by my  mother, did not take off my shoes. We never took our shoes off anywhere. However, I did take a pair of flip flops for use at a later date. Can’t pass up on a freebie.

3.) A Costume Change. The bride, who was very beautiful and wore a stunning gown actually changed her dress half way through the reception. I was floored! The new gown was equally as stunning but I just can’t wrap my head around changing gowns. I was so in love with my wedding gown I can’t imagine having to take it off during the reception and change. I mean who I am Lady Gaga? My wedding night we stayed at the Plaza hotel and I remember just walking in and out of the lobby because I wouldn’t take off my dress. BJ eventually had to put his foot down, “Alright, Jen that’s enough.”

4.) Photo Booth. Very popular at Bar Mitzvahs and sweet sixteens but I had no idea this trend had spread to weddings. If you wanted to take a break from the food and dancing you could take pictures of yourself in the photo booth. Of course what fun is a photo booth without props! My husband reluctantly took these pictures with me- he is a good sport. They have been a huge source of entertainment for my youngest daughter who just can’t stop laughing she thinks they are so ridiculous.

5.) Slide Shows. There were two big screen televisions hung in each corner of the room. After a time they began showing pictures from the wedding we were currently at. If you happen to be in a picture you better hope you looked good because then it played again and again for the remainder of the wedding. In addition to the party slide show, there was a well produced slide show of the bride and groom from infancy to the present day that was both sweet and sentimental.

6.) Fun Desserts.

Cotton candy, candy apples, hot pretzels! Had I died and gone to carnival heaven!photo 1photo 2photo 3As the guests were leaving they could grab some goodies for the ride home. Here we were dressed to the nines waiting around for cotton candy and candy apples as we waited for the valet to bring our cars around. I imagine it was quite a sight to see.

7.) After Party. If you were still ready to party you had an option other than hitting the nearest bar. In a third ballroom was an after party. I unfortunately was driven to the party and my ride and husband both vetoed my desire to stay for the after party. But really who am I kidding I was asleep before my head hit the pillow. I did manage to sneak a peek between the cotton candy and our car showing up. There was music and guess what? More food. From the doorway I saw a buffet table with sliders and wings. What a great idea!

Can’t imagine what the trends will be when my 13 year old is ready to get married.

Coach Potato to 5K

Anyone up for a run?

How about 26.2 miles?

English: ING NYC Marathon

More than 54,000 people descended on the five boroughs of NYC last Sunday to do just that. The NYC marathon is an iconic event that brings runners from all over the world. It also has a profound effect on those of us who stay at home on our coaches and watch the marathon coverage on tv.

All of us coach potatoes start thinking… “Hey maybe I can be a run a marathon too.” I mean if 54,000 people can do it why can’t I?

If you are seriously contemplating getting off the coach and running I wouldn’t suggest shooting for 26.2 today. Baby steps start with a walk and slowly work your way up to a run.

I highly suggest the coach potato to 5K app. It is such an easy way to go from nothing to a 20131105-090834.jpg5K. I am serious you don’t have to be a runner or even an athlete and you will be running 3.1 miles in 9 weeks.

Over the summer some friends and I decided to train for a 5k using the app. My one friend had never run a day in her life and  my other friend and I were both coming off injuries and hadn’t run in quite a bit, so we were all in need of some training.

The app training program is great. The time commitment isn’t even that overwhelming three times a week for 30 minutes, that’s it! The program alternates walking and running for the first few weeks. By the sixth week the walking is dropped and you have to run for a solid 20 minutes but you will be completely ready for it. From week six you build up to 30 minutes by week 9.

photo 2The first week was certainly the best with mostly walking and only a minute or so of running. I won’t lie, the beginning weeks were a little trying. Sometimes we thought we were going to die running for just three minutes. But I can’t explain it, it’s like magic. At the end of three weeks we were running 3 miles!

Here we are at my friend’s first 5K. And my friend who had never run… completely obsessed we have already run another 5K since then and I think she may have her on the half marathon in May!

40 and fabulous… a year later

41 years ago today a miraculous event happened.

I was born.

photo

Turning 40 last year was a huge milestone. 4oth birthdays are surrounded by excitement, 41 not so much. Forty has all the fun and flair with the whole 40 & fabulous thing. Forty-one is not nearly as fun and it’s no longer a novelty now it is a reality. Life is moving on and I am actually in my 40’s now.

I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do to mark my 41st birthday…

A massage?

A spa treatment?

A nice dinner?

After thoughtful debate I realized although those things are relaxing and fun ways to spend one’s birthday, but I decided the only thing I really wanted was a free day to clean up the attic playroom.

The playroom looks like its been ransacked. It’s really disheartening to go up there. Fortunately, the playroom is in the attic so it’s pretty easy to ignore the mess and pretend like it’s not there. But try as I might the mess isn’t going away in fact it’s just getting worse. The thought of a clean playroom makes me giddy. I am so excited to tackle this enormous and annoying task.

So the question really is when did I become this practical? Is this something that comes along with being in your forty’s, like weight gain, dry skin, and crow’s-feet?
