Just a Spoonful of Sugar: A Magical Afternoon with Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins on Broadway

This year for Mother’s Day my family surprised me with tickets to see Mary Poppins on Broadway. We figured a matinee was the way to go so we decided to wait until the summer when the kids and I would be off from school. In another life I wanted to be an actress / singer so I completely adore Broadway Shows!

Honestly though, I have never been a big Mary Poppins fan. I don’t know it’s not like I hated the movie but I really didn’t love it. Of course who doesn’t like “A spoonful of sugar” or my all time favorite “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” And naturally when I say that I mean the children’s joke, “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious- spell it!” and not the song.

So basically I wasn’t that anxious to see the show. Fortunately the kids were excited enough for all of everyone. They anxiously waited for the big day to roll around.

The big day did finally arrive. We put on our Broadway best and headed into the New Amsterdam Theatre in Manhattan. Mary Poppins has had an extremely successful run on Broadway for the last six years. It is a fan favorite and has received rave reviews and even several awards. And I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised it was fantastic!

I guess I never really watched the whole movie because I didn’t remember the plot that well. In a nutshell, Mary Poppins is a Nanny who mysteriously pops in begins working for the Banks family. The Banks family needs a lot of help the father is distant, the mother unhappy and the two children unruly. Mary Poppins floats in and saves the day and the family as well. I think my kids are now waiting for Mary Poppins to float in and make their lives perfect as well as clean up their room in a snap with a few magic moves.

It was a fantastic show and I absolutely loved it! The production was great. When Mary Poppins flies over the audience at the end the kids were wild with excitement. The sets were phenomenal and the cast was superbly talented.

Steffanie Leigh is currently making her Broadway debut in the title role and she is just terrific, a perfect Mary Poppins. She is so vibrant on stage and completely enjoyable to watch. Her counterpart Bert played by Gavin Lee is equally as talented and he originated the role of Bert in the London production so he plays the role to perfection. The rest of the cast is terrific and talented as well.

Maybe I never connected with Mary earlier on because I wasn’t a mother yet. Now that I am a mother I have a strong connection with her since like her I am also “Practically Perfect in Every Way” I am sure all the mothers will agree with me 😉

My five year old now tries to say everything in a British accent, I am not really sure she is getting it but it is really funny to listen to!

It is a wonderful day or evening out with the family. Absolutely worth it and I would recommend to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

And…truthfully I think we all could use a little Mary Poppins in our life.

Planes… Trains… And Automobiles!!

Last month my family and I decided to take a trip to our Nation’s Capitol. My oldest daughter was attending the Jr NYCL conference in DC so we decided to turn the conference into a mini family vacation.

My husband drove Caroline down to DC on Sunday and the plan was for me to meet up with him on Wednesday. In my mind I was planning on flying down. Flying seemed like the easiest way. Get a ride to the airport, hop on a plane, easy peasy! And when I say get there and hop on the plane I mean get to the airport go through security, take off my shoes, put everything into those little gray boxes and then put my shoes back on… then hop on the plane. The shuttle to DC from New York is under an hour and seemed like the way to go.

Of course it seemed like the way to go before I actually looked at the prices. In my head the price was going to be economical. Unfortunately, my fantasy rarely matches reality and the harsh truth was it was going to cost almost $400 for the three of us to fly down to DC.

Okay small speed bump, however there is more than one way to skin a cat or in this case get to DC. I switched to Plan B the train.

Amtrak Regional Coachclass 82990 2

In order to take the train I would have to take the commuter train into Manhattan to catch the train at Penn Station. The cost of the Amtrak down to DC was almost $300. This didn’t seem like that much of a price break since the flights were $400. If I was downgrading to the train I wanted a much bigger savings than $100.

On to Plan C the BUS! The cost of a BOLT bus to DC from Manhattan was $45.

Okay so the bus wasn’t ideal but it didn’t seem so bad!So basically it wasn’t a nightmare… but it wasn’t great. I ended up hiring a car to take me in to the city to catch the bus. I didn’t want to take the train into the city because I did not want to lug around two kids and luggage heading up to the bus stop. Afraid of the traffic into the city I had the car pick us up an hour and a half before the bus was due to depart. The girls and I were relaxing in the back of the car and I was daydreaming and not really paying any attention on the way in. Foolish mistake! The next thing I new we were at JFK airport. I leaned forward and inquired why we were at the airport. Turns out the driver knew a shortcut. Please keep in mind there is no shortcut from Long Island into Manhattan via the airport. The best I can figure out he was daydreaming too and forgot where he was heading.

To make a long story short we missed the bus. To add insult to injury the driver got a ticket for making an illegal left turn. Although I was upset that I was late I did feel a little responsible about the ticket- especially when the driver blamed the illegal maneuver on the fact that he was rushing to make sure that I made my bus. Unfortunately, the NYPD does not make allowances for trying to get your fare to the bus on time.

When he did finally drop us off it was on the wrong corner and I had to lug the kids and the luggage one city block, I know exactly what I was trying to avoid by taking the car! However, we took it in stride found the spot where many other people with luggage were standing and looking very hot and annoyed. You need to understand there is no sign “Bolt Bus Stop Here” so everyone sort of sports the same face of “Uhh is this where we need to be??”

The good news for me the bus was late and didn’t show up until 12:45 so in the end I did make the bus! I wonder if the driver would be happy?

And the bus ride wasn’t great but wasn’t horrific. I am used to driving not sitting in the back of the bus. By the time we did arrive in DC I was a little nauseated. Luckily the kids are used to riding in the back of buses and mini vans so they were fine. They actually thought it was fun. They had enough snacks to last them until Florida as well as outlets and WIFI what more could I kid ask for?

Yeah we finally made it!!!

Ouch… Not the dentist!

Now that school is finally over and summer is here it is time for…  you guessed it check-ups. There is a small window of time between the last day of school and the first day of camp and this is when I like to squeeze in all of the kid’s check-ups.

First up on our list of check-ups this week was the dentist. I scheduled an appointment for the first Monday we were out of school. My thinking was get it over and done with as quickly as possible.

My older girls have been to the dentist many times and aren’t too fazed by the experience. The older two are also big rule followers and are angelic patients. This was going to be my youngest’s first “real” check-up and I wasn’t really positive how she was going to fare for she is neither a rule follower nor an angel. Last year she went to the dentist but they just counted her teeth and gave her mouth a once over.

While preparing to write this post today I did a little research online and was shocked to find out that the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first dental visit should be at 12 months. Wow, I guess I am a little late bringing her at 5! I had always thought it was 4 with check-ups every 6 months after, which usually turns in to twelve months at my house. I guess I should do research more often… on the other hand maybe not who really wants to know when they mess up?

On route to the dentist Amelia seemed pretty calm but informed us that she does not like dentists or doctors because they use sharp things like needles. All right I admit that statement concerned me a little. I was starting to worry that she would not sit well for the hygienist while she had her teeth cleaned. I ignored the comment not wanting to dwell on it or make the situation any worse. I find the more I focus on a situation with the kids the worse it becomes.

We finally arrived at the dentist and Amelia bravely volunteered her sister to go first. Isn’t she a love and so generous. However, had this been a line for a roller coaster or ice cream she would have knocked her sister over to get there first!

My dentist, Dr. Mark DeNigris, is the greatest. I love him! When my oldest was little I asked him to refer me to a pediatric dentist. He was quite insulted. I guess I didn’t realize his practice is a family practice. I was pleased because as I mentioned he is the greatest. On Caroline’s first visit I started to walk with her into the back, I assumed I would have to sit with her during her exam. Nope, he stopped me in my tracks. He said, “I need to be her friend back there, you can’t come.” I was taken aback but I understood what he was saying and realized she would be much braver if Mommy wasn’t there. And you know what? He was right.

As Grace had her turn at the dentist Amelia and I played in the waiting room. Thankfully there are toys to play with to keep young ones occupied and also to distract them from any fears they may have about what kind of treacherous things go on behind the door where all the patients go…

Grace returned to the waiting room smiling accompanied by the hygienist, Donna who proclaimed that she was the best patient. After giving Grace the once-over and realizing she had returned in one piece I believe Amelia felt it was all right for her to take her turn. The dental hygienist was wonderful with her. She was both patient and understanding. Amelia made it through her visit flying colors. Her favorite part of the visit? The goodie bags and the prize box. She walked out of the dentist as if she had been to a birthday party with her bag in tow, stickers on her shirt, and a big smile on her face!

Helping Hands

It sometimes seems that everywhere we turn we are surrounded by bad news. Horrible and tragic stories that make us wonder about the world we live in. Considering we are continually pummeled with terrible news it is refreshing when we hear a story that makes us feel good and restores our faith in humanity.

A friend of mine recently had surgery. I wanted to help but wasn’t exactly sure what I could do. I think that most people want to help in situations like these but aren’t really positive how to be helpful or what to say.

Fortunately, another wonderful woman I know sent out an email inviting anyone who wanted to the opportunity make a meal for our friend. I got the initial email and was thrilled because this was my opportunity to help out. I responded immediately and promised to deliver Italian feast pasta and meatballs. I was so happy that I had responded quickly because within minutes my phone began pinging with response emails and didn’t stop until all the days were filled for the rest of the summer. How wonderful that everyone joined together to help out our friend. Everyone is so busy and has such hectic schedules but at the end of the day everybody made time to do something nice for someone else.

I delivered the meal this week to my friend and her family.  I felt so great! My daughter came with me and I thought it was such a valuable lesson for her. She was able to see first hand how communities join together. My friend came down from her room and personally thanked me. She just seemed so overwhelmed by the community and by how many people wanted to help out.

Of course when I volunteered to bring an Italian feast I was really volunteering my mother to make the meatballs, well honestly hers are way better than mine! Once again my mother came through with flying colors. I had been out with the girls and called her on my way home to say I was stopping for bread, salad and some “to go” containers. Naturally I was a day late and a dollar short and my mother had already made the pasta, salad and garlic bread as well as put everything into a labeled “to go” container. She even through in a batch of chocolate chip cookies for dessert. And no… I did not take credit for the dinner I just delivered it!

The mom who organized the meals took on a lot when she sent out that email. Several people responded at the same time for the same date. Which resulted in some confusion. After everything was squared away someone shared a site that is specifically designed to organize meals. The site is called Meal Train and it is a fabulous site. It sets up a calendar and keeps everything organized. There is an online calendar for setting up meals, an application for sending out invitations to participate on Facebook or email, and even sends out reminder emails. If you were thinking of setting up meals for someone in your community I would definitely recommend it. There is even an etiquette page with advice on making and bringing food to the person’s house! Very helpful site and even more it is free to use.

Such a great warm feeling to know that there are so many people in the world who want to help!
