This year for Mother’s Day my family surprised me with tickets to see Mary Poppins on Broadway. We figured a matinee was the way to go so we decided to wait until the summer when the kids and I would be off from school. In another life I wanted to be an actress / singer so I completely adore Broadway Shows!

Honestly though, I have never been a big Mary Poppins fan. I don’t know it’s not like I hated the movie but I really didn’t love it. Of course who doesn’t like “A spoonful of sugar” or my all time favorite “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” And naturally when I say that I mean the children’s joke, “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious- spell it!” and not the song.

So basically I wasn’t that anxious to see the show. Fortunately the kids were excited enough for all of everyone. They anxiously waited for the big day to roll around.

The big day did finally arrive. We put on our Broadway best and headed into the New Amsterdam Theatre in Manhattan. Mary Poppins has had an extremely successful run on Broadway for the last six years. It is a fan favorite and has received rave reviews and even several awards. And I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised it was fantastic!

I guess I never really watched the whole movie because I didn’t remember the plot that well. In a nutshell, Mary Poppins is a Nanny who mysteriously pops in begins working for the Banks family. The Banks family needs a lot of help the father is distant, the mother unhappy and the two children unruly. Mary Poppins floats in and saves the day and the family as well. I think my kids are now waiting for Mary Poppins to float in and make their lives perfect as well as clean up their room in a snap with a few magic moves.

It was a fantastic show and I absolutely loved it! The production was great. When Mary Poppins flies over the audience at the end the kids were wild with excitement. The sets were phenomenal and the cast was superbly talented.

Steffanie Leigh is currently making her Broadway debut in the title role and she is just terrific, a perfect Mary Poppins. She is so vibrant on stage and completely enjoyable to watch. Her counterpart Bert played by Gavin Lee is equally as talented and he originated the role of Bert in the London production so he plays the role to perfection. The rest of the cast is terrific and talented as well.

Maybe I never connected with Mary earlier on because I wasn’t a mother yet. Now that I am a mother I have a strong connection with her since like her I am also “Practically Perfect in Every Way” I am sure all the mothers will agree with me 😉

My five year old now tries to say everything in a British accent, I am not really sure she is getting it but it is really funny to listen to!

It is a wonderful day or evening out with the family. Absolutely worth it and I would recommend to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

And…truthfully I think we all could use a little Mary Poppins in our life.
