Are you addicted to hosting?

Help! I am an addict. I am addicted to hosting parties. It doesn’t matter what the product is I am easily seduced into hosting a party at my house. Pampered Chef… ParyLite… Lia Sophia… Tupperware… I don’t discriminate I love them all.

There are several factors that I blame for this addiction. The first factor is once upon a time I was a consultant for PartyLite and I always have empathy for the consultants. I have been in the consultant’s shoes and I know how difficult it can be to convince someone to host a show. Secondly, I am a sucker for a deal! I start looking at hostess specials and free products and I am hooked. I love free, but honestly who doesn’t? In addition, I personally know a consultant for each company. Combine these factors and the result is a person who cannot say “No” to the question,”Would you like to host a party?” In the last year alone, I have hosted two PartyLite candle shows and a Pampered Chef Party.

My latest shindig was a PartyLite Candle Show.  My friend Adrianna is a consultant and when she calls I just can’t turn her down. Although I have to say I was a little embarrassed to send out the invites. My personal rule of thumb is you must wait a year before having another party. My last show was only nine months ago. What would people think? I barely got the last orders out of my basement and here I was sending out a new invitation.

To make matters worse one of my friends never even received her order from my last show. I thought I bagged up her order, labeled it with her name, and shipped it off. Then I don’t know what happened, it disappeared. I looked around and could not find it anywhere. I asked around thinking I might have given it to someone else by mistake, but no luck. Maybe one day it will emerge from the black hole that is my basement. To make amends I ordered my friend a gift certificate in the amount she had spent. I was eager to give her the gift certificate to make up for this egregious error in hosting. One of the first rules of hosting is to make sure  you deliver the products in a timely fashion. I was planning on bringing it to her holiday party in December. The day of the party I placed it on the table so I would know where it was when it was time to go. Of course when we were leaving I couldn’t find it anywhere. I was tearing apart the kitchen. It was driving nuts! The good news is I found it. The bad news is I found it chewed and in the garbage. I had to go to the party and explain my dog ate her gift certificate. Luckily, she has a great sense of humor.

So, with my face a little reddened I sent out the Evites. I chose a Tuesday night so I knew going in the turn out would be low since  it was a weekday. My work friends would not make the trek out to my house unless it was Friday or Saturday. Thankfully a few loyal friends and family members were able to attend. Evites were out, people were coming one more detail to take care of, tell my husband. I never want to tell my husband when I agree to host a party because I know he is never that enthusiastic about these parties. Doing my typical wait until the last minute move, I told him at 4:30 am the morning of the party while he was getting dressed to go to work. I really need to work on my communication skills.

With most of the details taken care of, all that was left was to stop at the store and purchase some snacks. In the end the party was a success. Even on a weeknight it is fun to get together with your friends and have a glass or two of wine.  Also, I now have $300 in free product to pick out from the PartyLite catalog. The free shopping spree is really the best part, besides being with friends of course.

I truly love PartyLite candles, they are hands down the best burning candles. They are oil based which makes them last longer , burn cleaner and  liquefy when they burn which looks so beautiful. I know I am a little biased because I sold them but they really are my favorite! I hope that I can get enough candles to last awhile because I definitely will need to wait awhile before hosting again.

One for the Money… here at last!

The wait is over for  Janet Evanovich fans. One for the Money hits theaters this Friday. Ever since I began my journey into the Stephanie Plum series, I have been eagerly anticipating the big screen version of the first book in the series. My sister in-law suggested I read One for the Money several summers ago. At first, completely judging it by its hot pink, yellow and green cover, I scoffed at. It was not a book for me. I read police crime dramas not dopey chick books. However, at some point that summer I must have picked it up and began reading it.

I am so glad that I did. I loved it. After reading the first book in the series I immediately read the second, third, fourth and so on, straight through to the eleventh book. My sister in-law would finish each one and then pass it off to me. That summer we breezed through the whole series. This is not a testament to my superior reading ability, they are easy reads. The plots and the characters are so funny! I actually laugh out loud while I am reading. A habit which completely irritates my husband. He is skeptical and can’t grasp why I need to laugh out loud. He insists they can’t be that funny. He just doesn’t know Stephanie Plum.

Eighteen books later, I do and I love her. Finally, a heroine I can get behind. She is not perfect in anyway. In fact she is hilariously opposite of perfection. She has no food in her cupboards and no clean clothes in her closet. Her lack of household skill results in her popping by her mother’s house for dinner and to get her laundry done. Her mother is neurotic and her grandmother is crazy and they drive her completely nuts.

Stephanie is real and lovable, a great character. Every year I am anxious to order the latest installment. I am hungry  to dive in and read about the preposterous situations she finds herself in. The situations are many since she is employed as a bounty hunter. Of course she is a terrible bounty hunter, yet she does manage to stumble into success from time to time. Stephanie is so nutty but at the same time there is a touch of her we can all relate to. In addition, the ensemble cast of eclectic characters she interacts with are icing on the cake. It is a perfect recipe for a laugh out loud easy read.

So finally the wait is over… the movie is coming out in a few days. I can’t believe it I am so excited. Stephanie Plum is hitting the big screen. But wait… Katherine Heigle as Stephanie Plum, seriously?  How is pretty perfect Katherine Heigl going to portray completely imperfect Stephanie Plum.

I have my doubts, but I am hoping that she can pull it off. You spend so much time with a series and you have very distinct ideas about what the characters look like. Why doesn’t anyone ask me when they are casting a movie? I realize I may walk away disappointed which is often the case when books are made into movies. Anyone remember The Firm? By far the the worst movie adaptation of a book.

At the end of day I am still pretty excited it is coming out and I am truly looking forward to seeing it. Casting choices aside I think it will be a really good movie. What is even better is, Groupon is offering 60% of tickets for One for the Money. The Groupon is through Hollywood Movie Money and is good for use at most theaters. I purchased two tickets for $12. A great deal!

Take a peak… maybe you will fall in love with Stephanie too.

Monday Dinner… A Family Affair

What happened to Sunday Dinner?

Remember Sunday Dinner? Families would gather together on Sundays and share a big meal. Although, some families do still gather together on Sunday nights to share stories with their relatives over traditional pasta, meatballs, and sauce,  this time-honored tradition is on the decline. Another causualty of our very busy schedules.

When my mother was younger, every Sunday my grandparents took her and my aunt to their grandmother’s house. Sadly, I never met my great-grandmother, but my cousins and older sister who were lucky enough to have known her, referred to her affectionately  as “Farmer Grandma.” Farmer Grandma was not a  farmer nor did she live on a farm. In reality her farm was a big backyard in the suburbs that must have seemed huge and “farm-like”  through the toddler eyes’ of the great-grandchildren.

My mother recounts these Sunday Dinners as fun all day eating affairs. The meal began early in the afternoon around 2:00.Courses were many with a variety of delicious dishes. Anitpasto, pasta, meatballs, briaciole are just a sampling of the scrumptious fare they enjoyed. Best of all, the whole family came together.

These bucolic scenes of Sunday Dinner just don’t seem to work as well in modern day society. First of all, who eats like that? Several courses for dinner? I would have blown through a day’s worth of WW points after the first course alone. However, my relatives all survived without any major eating disorders and more to the point seemed to enjoy themselves as well. And the best part all of the relatives came!  That would be near to impossible in today’s world. Unfortunately, many of us have to work on the weekends. In addition, our budding athletes have soccer, lacrosse, basketball, and baseball games to be played on fields across the country on Sundays. On any given Sunday you can find yourself at one or more different sporting events.

Although, in my head, where that perfect mother with the perfect hair who makes the perfect meatballs lives, also resides the mom who desperatley wants  Sunday Dinners. I love the  thought of it! Along with all of my other delusions of grandeur I realize it is unrealistic. Sundays are so hectic and I just want to be home early to get everyone ready for school and work. I start to completely unhinge on Sunday nights and do not think I could handle it. We tried it for awhile with my family but it just didnt’ work.

However, all hope is not lost. I have to work late on most Mondays and don’t get home until around 6:00. My mother decided a few years ago, she would have us over for dinner on Mondays. She was already watching the kids on Mondays and wanted to save me the trouble of getting dinner ready at that hour.

It has become a tradition of our own. We all go to my mother’s for Monday Night Dinner. My sisters and their husbands come whenever they can. It is a modern twist on an old tradition. My children absolutely love Monday Night Dinner and look forward to it every week. It is great for me because I know atleast once a week the girls will eat a home-cooked meal.

My mother founder of Monday Night Dinner

Pictured here with my step-father and grandmother

It is not quite the same as the traditional Sunday Dinner. The parents drink water instead of wine and no anisette for the kids. However,  it is our tradition and most  importantly it works. They family is together and enjoying each other’s company. Although there are fewer courses than my Farmer Grandma’s Sunday meals the food is plentiful with a ton of variety. My mother makes sure there is something for everyone, and of course pasta and macaroni & cheese are always on the menu.

At Monday Night Dinner we play a game called Table Topics. Table Topics is a game comprised of over 100 cards with engaging questions on them. My daughters set one card at each place setting. During dinner we each take turns asking and answering the questions. The discussions that result are both wonderful and hilarious. We have discovered so much about each other and ourselves.  Often I am surprised by some of the answers the other relatives give. It really is an eye-opener and you do learn about one another.

The discussions also have inspired my mother and step-father to retell memorable stories from their childhoods. I love for my children to hear these stories, it is priceless. Also, these family discussions have  taught my children about our family values and some lessons on life. Sometimes the questions are intense so further explanations are needed and big discussions about life evolve. I adore listening to my daughters answer the questions, after we have explained a big topic.  I love the youthful simplified answers. As adults we tend to think and complicate things too much. It takes me forever to come up with an answer.

Table Topics are great and filled with so many unique questions. They are a great addition to our Mondy Night Dinner.

Here are some sample questions:

  • in your opinion what are the seven wonders of the world
  • which historical sporting event would you like to witness
  • which is more important intelligence or common sense
  • if you could do something dangerous just once with no risk what would you do
  • where would you choose to live if you had to leave this country
  • who would you rather meet your great grandparents or your great grandchildren

Mac & Cheese… Breakfast of Champions?

Amelia with her food of choice.

You have such lofty goals as a new mommy. Eleven years ago I marveled at my brand new baby girl, she was so precious. Perfect in every way!  And as the mother of this perfect child I would ensure she always ate healthy with lots of variety and fruits and vegetables. No daughter of mine would eat junk food or be one of those “picky eaters”

Three children later… how I have fallen!

As far as Amelia, my youngest, is concerned we are just happy if she is not playing with knives. My expectations as a mother are much more realistic now. Although, that idealistic mother is still in here somewhere, she rarely rears her head. She knows better. My motto as a mother has become “Choose your battles wisely”

As someone who has always battled weight, eating habits are a big concern of mine. You wouldn’t really know it because on the whole, my kids eating habits are pretty poor and they are really picky eaters. The three of them each have one main food staple that they love. My oldest would survive solely on McDonalds Chicken Nuggets. Even though McDonalds keeps insisting that they are really healthy, I have my doubts.

My middle daughter is all about the carbs. She adores plain pasta. Bone dry pasta without even a drop of butter. If it glistens, she will hand it back. Talk about the anti-Atkins! Her newest picky eater habit, which I feel compelled to share, is to take cheese off of pizza- which completely perplexes me. Cheese makes everything better! Who would take it off? I believe this move is not really about being picky but rather a show of solidarity for her good friend who has a dairy allergy. While I admire her loyalty, it makes me crazy! And who do you think eats the cheese that gets pulled off? Can you really blame me? It would be sinful to let good pizza cheese go to waste.

Then there is Amelia whose food of choice is Macaroni and Cheese. She will eat Macaroni and Cheese for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And on many days she has. She doesn’t even like to frequent restaurants who do not serve this culinary masterpiece. We have been out to dinner where she has actually refused to eat because Macaroni & Cheese was not on the menu.  All I can say is thank heavens for EasyMac.

Do I want her to eat better? Of course I do. I would like all of them to make better food choices. I just refuse to battle over meals. When I was in elementary school my best friend would only eat hamburgers from McDonalds. Seriously, that was all she would eat. Her mother was besides herself. I always remember she and my mother talking about it. I recall the pediatrician told my friends mother to let it go. At least she was eating and eventually she would grow out of it. I haven’t seen her in about 20 years, but I am sure she has expanded to other food groups by now.

Therefore, if Amelia wants to eat Mac & Cheese for breakfast, fine with me. In the beginning, I did protest and say no a lot. I would even beg her to eat something else. Then I began to question my motives. Why no? In a couple of hours I would let her eat it for lunch so what was the difference. It’s not like she wants to eat chocolate cake for breakfast. What was my reasoning?  Was I resisting Mac & Cheese because it is not a cereal or a waffle or because it is not labeled a breakfast food? I had to let go of my notions of what is a  breakfast food. I had to expand that category to include mac & cheese. I am pretty sure that she won’t grow up eating EasyMac for the rest of her life. Like my mother always says, “This too shall pass.”

She has to get sick of it eventually…

Right??

Run? Only When Chased!

Only when chased was my standard line when anyone dare suggest I try running. My older sister is a runner and had always insisted it was a great way to keep in shape. Basically, I am pretty stubborn and I refused to listen. I hated running and I hated runners. Runners in their shorts in the freezing cold running on the side of the road, precariously close to my car. I hated them and their discipline. Mostly because when I tried to run for more than a few seconds I was completely out of breath.

If I ever had been chased I would have been caught pretty quickly.

I have to admit when I am wrong, Unfortunately, I have to do that a lot. I love running and runners!

I am now one of those people running on the side of the road about to be run over. I don’t know how it happened. I can’t really explain how the transformation occurred. For years on and off I was a walker. I would walk 2 miles a few times a week. Then, miraculously, on one  of those walks three years ago I started to run and I haven’t stopped. I am no Forrest Gump but I did turn into a runner.

I became slightly obsessed and I began to register for local 5K’s. I have come to learn that I love competition. I love running races! It’s a great adrenaline rush. It’s not about winning or even being fast, it is the thrill of finishing. It doesn’t matter that I come in 307 out of 600, all that matters is crossing the finish line.

I have even advanced to half marathons, 13.1 miles. People who knew me back in high school can’t even believe that I can run let alone run 13 miles. My best friend from high school was shocked to learn I was running, since in high school I couldn’t even navigate her family’s living room. I would actually trip over the furniture. I was extremely accident prone and even broke my leg twice.

I am still pretty accident prone but that is not my biggest obstacle. Finding the time to run is a huge obstacle. With working and taking care of the kids it is hard to carve out time to run. Luckily,I have a very supportive  family who is willing to help out and watch the kids so I can go running.

Other than childcare and finding the time, running is really pretty easy. I truly believe that anyone can run. If you start off slow you can definitely build up to whatever your goal might be, even a half marathon. When I was training for the half marathon I only had to run four days a week. It was very manageable. I followed MarathonRookie.com a great website for beginner runners.  It is filled with great tips and the training schedules are really easy to follow.

My best friend while running, besides an hysterical running partner who can keep me laughing for 10 miles, is my  IPod Nano . This is the greatest running invention of all time. There is no big bulky arm band to put on it clips right to your shirt or shorts. Unlike the shuffle, which also has a clip, you can add and listen to playlists. It is amazing! It also has a built in pedometer and Nike features that help to track your fitness goals.

I have already signed up for the Long Island Half Marathon on May 6th. Hope I can do it again.

My mother, sisters, daughters, and I after running/walking a 5K race.

Running it’s contagious.
