Lenten Calendar for Kids

My Car Stuck in Snow

Sorry I realize it’s Valentine’s Day but like my car in the snow the other day I am a little stuck.  I had to share one more thought about Lent.

A few years ago my daughter brought home for religion a Lenten Calendar and I thought it was the greatest idea. I had searched the internet last year for it, but had no luck. Luckily this year a friend shared her son’s with me.

Basically the calendar is a rainbow with 40 blocks. For each day of Lent there is an activity to complete. Once the activity is completed you color in a block of the rainbow. I love it because it is so concrete and focuses on being a better Christian in a way that little ones can uderstand. Some activities are “give someone a hug” “say grace before dinner” and “make someone smile today” All simplistic things that will make your child feel good. Then when Easter rolls around they will have a colorful rainbow that illustrates all the good they have done for the past 40 days.

Please print and share the calendar. Unknown-5

40 days of no Facebook say it isn’t so…

Today is Ash Wednesday and it marks the first day of a 40 day period of sacrifice for UnknownChristians. I guess it’s our payback for “Anglo Saxon Winter Privilege Night” (Schmidt, New Girl season 2, episode 9) or as I like to call it Christmas.

Some years I have a really hard time deciding what to give up. It can be tough finding something you enjoy that you can live without. Of course you could give up going to the gym or eating healthy but that is not really the spirit of Lent. So looking for inspiration I googled the ten most common things people give up for Lent.

Top Ten Most Common Things Given Up for Lent

  • cigaretteSmoking– Since I am not a smoker this one is out. However, I do think it is a great idea to give it a try for 40 days. It could be the start of quitting for good.
  • Junk Food– For me this category is just too broad. All junk food English: A pile of potato chips. These are Utz...seems impossible to give up. I would need it pared down a little to something more specific like potato chips. Maybe even a specific brand like I can’t have Ruffles but Utz are okay. There is too much junk I love and wouldn’t want to live without it.This image shows a white wine glass (WMF Easy)...
  • Alcohol– 40 days seems like a really long time to go without a glass of wine.
  • Watching Television– This is definitely a deal breaker for me. How could I live without television. How could I live without Schmidt! I am hooked on so many shows: Revenge, Scandal, New Girl, The Good Wife, Bar Rescue and the list goes on. I couldn’t make it 40 days. I suppose you could dvr them all but realistically I would have to stay home for days to watch 40 days worth of recorded shows! Unknown-1

  • Chocolate– Truth be told I would rather have a cheeseburger than something sweet. Chocolate is not such a big deal for me so it really isn’t something I would give up, unless of course I was looking for the easy way out…Unknown-2
  • Soda– Giving up soda is my standard Lenten Sacrifice. I really hate that I drink so much soda because I know it’s no good for you. It makes me wonder if I can give it up every year for 40 days why do I go back to it? Unknown-3
  • Gossiping– Been there done that with this sacrifice, don’t think I will go there again. It was a long 40 days without my friends.
  • Cursing – I have never tried this before but I think I am going to add it to my list of sacrifices this year. I don’t curse much or maybe I do Damn It! Especially with the kids who tend to copy everything you say this might be beneficial for the whole family.
  • Texting- No way can’t do it. Anyone who knows me will read this and agree, my phone would probably have to be surgically removed from my hand. Texting is how I communicate with everyone! In fact it is the best mode of communiEnglish: iphone Deutsch: iphonecation for my husband and I. We fight much less when we text. For the sake of a marital bliss I just can’t go there.

  • Social Media- A new twist on Lenten Sacrifice is to give up social media. I  have noticed it is becoming increasingly popular to give up Facebook for Lent. Last night as I scrolled through Facebook I saw many sad “goodbye for now posts” as Facebook Friends posted their final posts preparing to remove themselves from Facebook for the next 40 days. They will have to suffer through 40 days without posting, liking, and sharing. I never really thought about giving up Facebook, or Twitter, or Instagram for that matter. Interesting new idea, maybe next year.

After thinking it over I have decided to give up cursing and soda for lent. So if you see me on the street with a Coke Zero spewing expletives be sure to give me a smack.

What will you give up?

#Monday Mealtime 14 Minute Chocolate Lava Cake

A cake in fourteen minutes?? In the microwave??

DSCN4771

I know it sounds completely unbelievable but it’s true!

The greatest thing about this cake is that it is ready to eat in fourteen minutes. The worst thing about this cake is also that it is ready in only fourteen minutes. It’s a curse and a blessing.

A year ago I hosted a pampered chef party at my house. My friendly local Pampered Chef Consultant, Corin came by with her bag of recipes and a ton of fun cooking tools. We broke out the wine and had a good time. During the party I became completely mesmerized with the deep covered baker that goes in the microwave. You can cook literally anything in the microwave with this stoneware baker.

The recipe she made that night was the Chocolate Lava Cake and quite honestly I bought the deep covered baker solely for the 14 minute chocolate lava cake. There are a slew of recipes that go with the pan but who needs ’em I have cake.

It’s so easy it’s almost ridiculous.

Ingredients:DSCN4751

Chocolate Cake Mix

Pre-made Chocolate Icing (16oz can)

eggs

water

oil

Directions:

Make the cake in the deep covered baker as directed on the box. Then spoon the icing into the uncooked cake batter. Cook in the microwave for 14 minutes. That’s it! In fourteen minutes the cake is completely baked and the icing is melty and delicious!

Tips and suggestions:

I thought I could outthink this recipe and tried it with both vanilla icing and white cake but it didn’t work as well. You really need the chocolate for all the gooey lava goodness.

Was it worth buying this deep covered baker exclusively for cake? Absolutely!

Forty and Firsts… One Blogger’s Inspiration

Firsts… this was a year of firsts.

In September I sent my oldest daughter, Caroline, off to high school. Lots of firsts there… First time walking to school, first boyfriend, first team tryouts, first dance… lots of first. High school can be a scary place. There are about a million high school movies that can back me up on this. Although, in reality I know of no high school as cruel as the one in Mean Girls or as saccharine sweet as East High in High School Musical. That being stated I think we can all agree high school can be both wonderful and tumultuous. I am excited and nervous for her… it’s definitely a time of contradictions and mixed-up emotions. I often look at her and realize we have fewer years ahead of us with her at home than we have behind us. It’s only a short six years before she will be off to college. What a scary thought!

Meanwhile as my oldest is embarking on her high school journey, my youngest, Amelia my baby, is just beginning her school career. More firsts, first day of kindergarten, first report card, first friends, first homework, first playdates, first wiggly tooth… lots of firsts. I adore the innocence of kindergarten. Elementary school is such a fun & exciting place, and sadly the reality is it will be over in a blink of an eye. She too will be heading off to the high school before I know it. However, I feel slightly more prepared this time around. They say third times a charm.

And in the middle is my middle Grace.  Not the baby and not the oldest but squarely in the middle. The middle in birth order and in the middle school which puts me with a child in each of the three schools in my district. About to turn ten she too is going to experience her own firsts as she begins her tween years. Tween years, those pre-teen years that are filled with many firsts as well as they try to make their first attempts at independence. Tween years where you want to be both big and little at the same time. You want to be cool but you still want to play with your dolls.

Each child is at such a different place in their young lives and my husband and I are stretched to our limits caring for each of them and their specific needs & wants.  As I am pulled from school to school I realize how fortunate I am to have three fabulous girls to keep me on the run.

As if my growing family wasn’t enough to make me feel well-worn I also turned forty this year. Adding insult to injury forty definitely had an effect on me. I am older and my skin is starting to show signs of wrinkles but I much wiser and it’s official I now  know everything, prior to forty I was just pretending to know it all.

Ha Ha I wish! Actually I still don’t know anything, if it is possible I think I  might even know less. Every day is a different adventure filled with stories happy, sad, funny, endearing but all equally precious.

Forty and firsts that is why I began my blog. My life, my girls they are my muse for my posts. Last January when I began my blog I had no idea how much I would love it! I truly love sharing our stories and how we cope with the roller coaster of life. My blog is my way of cherishing every moment.

The family is extremely supportive of the blog and for the most part enjoys all the shares. Everyone now knows what you say to me today could be tomorrow’s post! However, my older two not always loving all the sharing. They have applied for veto rights on any stories that maybe sensitive. Stories like buying their first bra with their father or sex ed classes at school. Okay so you live and learn.

Forty and firsts I have enough inspiration to keep me blogging until… forever.

Christmas Already??

The Thanksgiving turkey is barely digested, the leftovers aren’t cold yet, and the dishes are still in the dishwasher but none of that matters. Thanksgiving ends with abruptness of a sledge-hammer Thursday night. I always feel a little bad for Thanksgiving, as a holiday it kind of gets the short end of the stick. Thanksgiving is the middle child of the fall holidays. It’s kind of smashed in-between Halloween and Christmas and really doesn’t get the respect it deserves.

As the door on Thanksgiving slams shut rather quickly the door to Christmas swings wide open. By the time you wake up from your food coma Friday morning early risers have already put up their trees, decorated their houses in lights and garland, and are singing Christmas carols!

It just seems so early! Christmas is not for weeks!

I was one of the many who refused to decorate for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. Simply on principle I would not partake in such nonsense. I need time to transition from Thanksgiving to Christmas. In addition, I adamantly refuse to Black Friday shop but that is more about the fact I don’t know what to get anyone rather than on principle.

For years I would wait, and of course run out of time as December is insanely busy.  Instead of the decorations going up too early they went up too late only days before Christmas Eve.

It was time for a re-evaluation… Was it really worth it to take a stand and refuse to decorate? In the long run what was I proving? And to whom was I proving it to? In hind sight it seemed a little silly to wait until later to decorate when I have the time on Friday. I am off from work, I don’t Black Friday shop it just makes sense.

So now I have joined the ranks of the day after Thanksgiving decorators. Friday morning
I  was fa la la la-ing along with everyone else. Amelia joined in the fun and put on her Santa hat and ho ho ho-ed all day long.

I am happy to say my decorations are up… so what if it’s still November! I can enjoy my decorations for the whole season and more- since in the spirit of full disclosure I don’t take them down until around Valentine’s Day!
