You Have Been Ghosted

Boo!

You have been ghosted!

At night children of all ages are running throughout my neighborhood after dark, sneaking up to front doors, leaving behind bags, ringing bells, and then running away.

When I was little we called this ringing and running, which was not acceptable at all. However, add a bag full of candy and a cute sign and now we have a completely acceptable custom.

As soon as the leaves start to change my children anxiously await for October so they can start ghosting there friends. It has become quite a tradition in our family. Weekend nights friends are invited over and the ghosting begins.

The rules for ghosting are simple. You can only ghost houses if the family is home and if that haven’t yet been ghosted. Leave a bag of candy at the door along with a sign for the family to hang on the door so others will know they have been ghosted. And most important rule- don’t get caught!

Over the years ghosting has become so popular. Everyone seems to get ghosted multiple times regardless of the signs on the door. Also, not getting caught is becoming more of a challenge. My own daughter takes off like a bat out of hell when she hears the knock on the door. She has successfully caught several ghosters over the years chasing them down the block.

My girls went out with some of their friends, their father and his friend last Saturday night. They made copies of their sign, loaded up the treat bags and created lists with many potential targets. After being directed to shorten their lists they reluctantly crossed off  names and brought the amount down to a respectable number. Dressed all in black with their hoodies up, prepared to be as sneaky as possible they set out.

My fourth grader and her friend did a pretty good job of not getting caught. They were pretty serious ghosters. The 12 year olds put in a good effort but I believe they were caught multiple times. I don’t know if you have ever been anywhere with several twelve year old girls but there is a lot of shrieking. I don’t believe their mission was too covert.

If you would like to try Ghosting feel free to download our ghosting sign and make copies. BOO

No Princessess Here

Cinderella (Disney character)

I am all about the princesses. I am all about the glitter. I run in hoop earrings and my work out tanks have sequins. In a nut shell I am a girlie girl and for the most part my girls follow suit.

And then there is Amelia… The youngest of three who basically has to fend for herself because we are all so busy. Most kids her age like to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Agent Oso, or Little Einsteins. But not Amelia her favorite show is Power Rangers, which drives me insane. Power Rangers really???

Power Rangers Samurai

Who even knew they were still on the air? Certainly not me! My other girls never watched Power Rangers. We spent mind numbing hours watching Barney and The Wiggles not Power Rangers.

Well not only are they on the air, there are about eighty different versions of the television show on all the time on Nick Toons. If you would like to check out the Power Rangers some of your choices are Power Rangers Samurai, Power Rangers Super Samurai, Power Rangers in Space, Power Rangers Dino Thunder and Power Rangers Turbo just to name a few. Amelia’s favorite is Super Samurai but she will watch any one of the shows.

So should I have been so surprised when she asked, no begged, to be a Power Ranger for Halloween. Probably not. I tried to dissuade her with Minnie Mouse or a mermaid or even a butterfly but she wasn’t having it. In the end I had to give in because she truly does love them so much. At least she picked the pink ranger!

Today we went to a Halloween Party and there was my Pink Power Ranger playing amongst all the Rapunzels, Ariels,  and Cinderellas. As I watched  I had to smile. I guess I have to let her be who she wants to be. I should be happy she knows what she wants and is not afraid to be an individual.

Bare Fruits Cinnamon Apple Crisp Review

These might be my new favorite snack!

At first glance you might be turned off but I urge you not to judge this yummy snack on first impressions. They have a delicious cinnamon taste that kind of reminds me of applesauce. What I really love about them is they are CRUNCHY. I don’t know about you, but I get pretty hungry around the 3 or 4 o’clock and crave a crunchy snack. The bag is even resealable to keep them crunchy. Which is important because there is nothing worse than when your crunchy snack goes soggy and stale.

A crunchy tasty snack that is good for you is hard to find. There are always the typical crunchy snacks like chips and pretzels but they are kind of tired and don’t really do anything for my figure. Apple chips are different option. Of course if you don’t like apples they are probably not the snack for you. This was the case with my daughter who I made try them, needless to say she is not a fan.

I carried them around with me for a few days and asked people to try them out, and the results were overwhelmingly positive. People at first were cautious but eventually tried them and liked them. I didn’t not get too many positive votes from kids but adults really thought they were a great snack.

Bare Fruits Cinnamon Apple Crisps are 100% organic, fat free, gluten free with no added sugar or preservatives. They are such an honest simple snack. And for those of us who are always counting Weight Watcher’s points one serving is only one point. A pretty great snack and very satisfying, especially for only one point!

To purchase Bare Fruits and try out this distinctive snack for yourself check out their website Bare Fruits.

To Flu Shot or Not to Flu Shot

It’s flu season again which also means it is flu shot season. Flu shots can be a hotly debated topic. People definitely have very strong opinions about vaccinations and whether they should let their children be vaccinated.

Years ago when my daughter was two she had a high fever and I took her to the doctor. The doctor gave her a flu test, which shocked me because I had never heard of that before, and it came back positive. She was curious why I hadn’t brought her in earlier for a flu shot. Truthfully, I had no idea about flu shots back then and didn’t even realize she was old enough to get one. Turns out that flu shots are recommended for everyone 6 months and older. Since then my husband and I have decided to get flu shots for all of us.

Protecting my family from the flu is important to me. In addition to keeping the family happy and healthy through the winter it also is vital for my grandmother who is 94. It would be very dangerous for my grandmother if she was to catch the flu and my kids are always with her.

In order to get vaccinated this year I went to CVS Minute Clinic. It was my very first time visiting the CVS Minute Clinic and it was such a positive experience. I had no idea that there were actual medical clinics inside CVS Stores. I am there anyway buying beauty products, greeting cards, and all my pharmacy needs why not visit the Minute Clinic.

It was so quick and easy. The hardest part was signing in on the touch screen kiosk. There was only one person on line ahead of my husband and I. We were in and out in less than ten minutes. The actual shot was painless and the nurse practitioner we
saw was extremely professional.

The shot may have been painless but the ribbing I was getting from my husband was not. Enjoy the video showing my quick and painless flu shot at CVS Minute Clinic and a few giggles while I get teased by my husband who apparently is now a comedian.

Frankenweenie out in theaters now!

The unlikely combination of Tim Burton and Disney has resulted in a visually stunning new animated film just in time for Halloween. Frankenweenie is a parody and tribute to the original Frankenstein. Parents will enjoy the parallel characters and events in this stop motion animated cinematic event. The black and white 3-D animation is amazing to watch and gives this film an old fashioned quality.

The story centers around Vic Frankenstein and his best friend Sparky, his dog, who tragically dies in the beginning of the movie. (It’s Disney and Tim Burton of course there is a death) Heartbroken from the loss of his best pal Victor, a scientific prodigy, decides to bring Sparky back to life Frankenstein style. In his attic in true Frankensten style while his oblivious parents watch tv he creates Frankenweenie.

Victor tries in vain to hide his existence from his parents and his creepy classmates but eventually the word gets out and the fun and weirdness begins. In turn each child sneaks into the town pet cemetery and tries their hand at playing mad scientist to bring their beloved pets back to life and here is where the madness begins.

Reviews were mixed from the five children ages ranging from 5-12, who accompanied me to the movie. Amelia, 5 years old was hysterical crying at parts but once the movie was over wanted to see it again. Grace, 9 years old felt it was “awkward” which I find has become a popular word with my kids albeit often misused. Caroline & Brittany, 12 years old thought it was “creepy.”

As far as Halloween movies go I think “creepy”and “awkward” might as well be two thumbs up. Check this out in 3-D before it is out of theaters.
